Meet Our Staff
Heartview Foundation has a staff of approximately 35 full-time, part-time, and contracted professionals. The staff is made up of highly-trained, experienced professionals in the addiction treatment field.
Addiction counselors, nurses, social workers, a mental health worker, a psychologist, a physician specially trained in addiction care, a chaplain, chiropractor, certified yoga instructor, art instructor, chemical dependency technicians, and many and others will all be involved in treating your illness.
Together, we will work with you and your family or loved ones to help you maintain abstinence from alcohol or drugs and begin a new life.
Key members of our professional staff that may be involved in your care are listed below.
Kurt A. Snyder, MMGT, LSW, LAC
Kurt has been the Executive Director at Heartview Foundation since January 2005. In addition to holding a Master’s in Management, Kurt is also a Licensed Social Worker and a Licensed Addiction Counselor. Kurt works under the Board of Directors in providing financial, clinical, personnel, and technical oversight for Heartview. He is active in many state and national organizations related to addiction treatment, bringing cutting edge knowledge to the Heartview staff and opportunities for input in many addiction treatment arenas.
Beth Stroup-Menge, MS, LSW, LAC

Beth Stroup-Menge has been affiliated with Heartview since 1983. She was formerly the Director of the Adolescent Unit. Beth serves Heartview in doing comprehensive patient evaluations, and also policy and procedure development.
02 Medical Director
Melissa J. Henke, MD
Dr. Henke, Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry, serves as Heartview’s Medical Director. In that capacity, Dr. Henke participates in interdisciplinary case review, develops and oversees patient medical protocols, reviews nursing assessments for appropriate withdrawal management, and confers with the interdisciplinary team regarding patient care management. She also provides medical oversight to the Medication-Assisted Therapy program and ongoing care to individual patients.
Matthew Doppler, Ph.D.
Dr. Doppler, is employed by Sanford Behavioral Health in Bismarck as well as providing psychological services at Heartview. He engages in weekly consultation with Heartview’s Interdisciplinary team. Dr. Doppler reviews patients’ psychological testing, determines the need for psychiatric referrals, makes treatment recommendations, establishes psychological testing protocols for adolescents and adults, and reviews individual cases, upon request.
Claudette Reno, PhD
Dr. Reno, is employed by Sanford Behavioral Health in Bismarck as well as providing psychological services at Heartview. Bruce Carlson, LAC

Bruce has been working as a counselor in the addiction field since 1985. He is a highly experienced counselor and an effective administrator. Bruce provides both direct patient care, and serves as Director of Counseling Services. In that capacity, he is responsible for all aspects of counseling services in Residential Services and Outpatient Services. His administrative responsibilities also include counseling personnel management, policy and program development and implementation, supervision of addiction counselor trainees and professional visitors, and the provision of community education.
Karissa Kautzman, BS, LAC

Karissa, a Hettinger native, completed her Addiction Studies with a minor in Business Administration through Minot State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree. She interned at Heartview and West Central Human Service Center and was hired by Heartview during her internship. Karissa currently facilitates Day Treatment.
Marjean Schwehr, LAC

Marjean joined the Heartview staff January of 2013. She has been an addiction counselor since 2003 with previous employment at Prairie Learning Center and the Bismarck Transition Center. Marjean completes comprehensive evaluations and works with the Monday evening continuing care program. Marjean teaches community Alcohol/Drug Education classes both at Heartview and throughout the community, as requested.
Roger Peet, LAC

Roger joined the Heartview staff in March 2013. He has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Mary with Post Baccalaureate work in addiction counseling. Roger started his addiction counseling career in 1994 and spent the entire time working at the North Dakota State Penitentiary. Roger completes comprehensive patient assessments and is currently working with the evening Intensive Outpatient Program.

Natalee has been employed at the Heartview Foundation since March 2014. She obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from MSUM in 2009 and then went on to complete her Addiction Studies coursework through Minot State. Natalee currently completes comprehensive patient evaluations and facilitates an evening Continuing Care Group on Thursdays.

Tom Regan, LAC

Tom has served as Heartview's public relations director since June 2013. The first two decades of Tom's 40-year professional career were spent in journalism and broadcasting fields. He moved from his hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Bismarck-Mandan in 1981 to work for Prairie Public Broadcasting where he was manager of the Radio Division. From 1994 to 2009, Tom was executive director of Missouri Slope Areawide United Way. Tom completed master's degree coursework in addiction counseling through University of Mary in May 2013, and in addition to his public relations work, he is a licensed addiction counselor at Heartview. Tom also served on Heartview's Board of Directors for 11 years. Tom facilitates continuing care on Thursday evening.
Ron J. Gerhardt, BS, LAC

Ron, a veteran in the addiction field, is Heartview’s most long-term, experienced counselor, working in the field since 1971. He is semi-retired, but continues to conduct an Aftercare group and complete comprehensive evaluations. Earlier in his career, Ron was Heartview’s Executive Director, and worked for a mental health center and a human service center. Ron is highly skilled in the addiction field and brings experience, history, and wisdom to patients and staff alike at Heartview.

Crystal joined the Heartview staff in October of 2013 after 8 years in the field of substance abuse and mental health. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in psychology along with a Masters Degree in Counseling. Crystal works closely with patient’s families in Heartview’s family program including the H.E.A.R.T. program and provides counseling and mental health services to patients in need. Crystal also works with those interested in being a recovery advocate and follows the recovery bills through the ND Legislature.
Tracy Ochsner, LAC

Tracy joined the staff here at Heartview in 2016. Tracy obtained her Bachelor of Science at NDSU and has a Master’s Degree in Human Relations Development. She has been a Licensed Addiction Counselor since 2006 and has experience working with patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and has worked with adolescents as well as adults. She currently completes comprehensive patient evaluations and fills in with Day Treatment when necessary.

Kelsey LaBere, LAPC

Kelsey worked in our residence while going to school and in 2016 she obtained a Masters Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and is licensed as an LAPC. She provides individual and group counseling as well as other mental health services for patients in need. She is also trained as a Tobacco Treatment Specialist and provides tobacco cessation services.

Kiki joined the staff here at Heartview in 2017. Kiki has a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. She has been a Licensed Addiction Counselor since 2003 and has experience working in public, private and correctional spheres. Kiki has previously facilitated day treatment, IOP, continuing care, codependency continuing care, and women’s continuing care, as well as adolescent and adult drug court. She currently completes comprehensive patient evaluations and facilitates an Eveining IOP Group as well as a Wednesday afternoon Continuing Care Group.

Kay has been affiliated with Heartview since 1985 as an addiction counselor and educator. Kay is skilled in patient assessment and serves in that capacity on a contractual basis.
Bruce Schwan, LAC

Bruce Schwan joined Heartview’s staff in May of 2011. Bruce came to Heartview with 30 years’ experience, having worked for two Human Service Centers and as a private practitioner. Bruce is a certified Recovery Coach trainer which is an after-treatment program that helps patients build life skills and supports long-term sobriety. Bruce does comprehensive patient evaluations at Heartview.
Susan Wagner, LSW

Susan joined the staff in January 2015. She is a licensed social worker with over 32 years of experience in the behavioral health field including juvenile corrections. She is currently a Program Manager/Standards Coordinator at Heartview. Susan oversees a grant with the Council on Abused Womens’ Services, the Joint Commission accreditation process, policy/procedure development, and other program management/development related to patient care.

Crystal Messer, RN
Crystal attended Medcenter One College of Nursing where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She then worked at Medcenter One/Sanford Hospital on a medical surgical floor where she gained experience with overdose, withdrawal, emotional and behavioral issues as well as post-surgical care until starting at Heartview in 2013.
At Heartview Crystal oversees Residential intakes-assuring that the patient meets requirements to be admitted into the residence and/or medication administration and monitoring. She also works closely with Dr. Henke regarding the needs of her clients and the Buprenorphrine program.
Jessica Schneider, RN, BSN
Jessica has her Bachelor of science degree in Nursing from Medcenter One College of Nursing along with Bachelor of Art degree in Psychology. She has worked in the mental health field for many years. Jessica takes part in nursing assessments, intake calls, assists in Medication Assisted therapy, and care of physical needs of the patient.
Jamie Mettler, RN
Jamie graduated from Jamestown College in 2000 with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. She joined Heartview in March 2015. She has experience in many areas of nursing, but her most recent employment was with HIT working with traumatic brain injuries and mental health. Jamie provides direct patient care and assists patients with detox medications, mental health services, and med assisted therapy. She is involved in taking intake calls for patients interested in residential services and completes nursing assessments.

Pam Crawford, RHIA, SPHR
Pam joined the Heartview staff in January of 2014. She is coordinating compliance with Joint Commission, HIPAA privacy and security, quality assurance and improvement activities, addiction treatment confidentiality, and provides oversight of health information services. She is an attorney, licensed to practice law in North Dakota and credentialed as an RHIA, Registered Health Information Administrator, through the American Health Information Management Association. In addition, she is credentialed as a SPHR, senior professional in human resources, through the national Society for Human Resource Management.
Pam had served on the Heartview Board of Directors for a short period of time prior to joining the staff.
09 Grant Management

Doug was the founder of Youthworks, an agency serving at-risk youth, and worked there for 35 years before retiring in 2014. He was the Program Administrator for the SD Office on Children, Youth and Families prior to founding Youthworks and Mountain Plains Youth Services. He has been employed part-time at Heartview working on program development and technology-based behavioral health projects. Doug has a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology.

Darcy Olson, MEd, LAC
Originally from Williston, ND, Darcy returned to the state after 24 years in Minnesota working at a variety of positions in the chemical dependency field. Prior to his employment at Heartview, Darcy was in private practice offering two outpatient programs to jail inmates in Becker County, MN. Darcy obtained a BA degree from Minot State University in 1986, majoring in addiction studies, and earned his Masters of Education degree in 1988 from North Dakota State University, with a focus on addiction studies.
