Posted 11/05/12 (Mon)
Over 100 former patients and their families returned to Heartview for the ocean-theme reunion the weekend of August 3-5, 2012. The event began Friday evening with open Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings. An ice cream social followed, during which current & former patients, family members, and staff found time to reconnect.
Saturday festivities began in the morning with a 5K walk/run and a best-ball golf tournament. Workshops were held at Heartview Saturday afternoon on a range of topics, including: Spirituality; Art & Music in Recovery; Relationships; and one entitled “Catch the Wave,” during which new innovations in recovery, such as social media, were discussed.
Saturday evening activities included a social and banquet at The Bismarck Country Club. Lana N. spoke on behalf of Al-Anon, followed by keynote speaker Mickey G., who told an engaging story of his personal addiction and recovery.
The gathering continued on Sunday morning with a family-fun event. An inflatable slide, dunk tank, and face-painting activities were enjoyed by people of all ages. Heartview’s newest chaplain, Larry Jahnke, delivered a Sunday morning message of hope. A catered picnic followed. Through the hard work of many volunteers and Heartview staff members, Heartview patients and their families reconnected and caught the “Wave of Recovery.”
Next year’s reunion will be held in September in conjunction with National Recovery Month.. More information will follow.
