Over 100 former patients and their families returned to Heartviewfor the reunion the weekend of July 29, 30, 31st. Attendees were from as far back as the 1970’s and from many locations in the US and Canada.
The event began Friday evening with an open house and tours of the newly renovated building. Following the tours, an open Alcoholics Anonymous meeting was held giving many the opportunity to speak. An ice cream social followed during which many patients found one another for the first time in many years. A highlight of the evening was the gathering of 14 current and former Heartview nurses.
Saturday festivities began in the morning with a 5k walk/run through a Bismarck park. Workshops were held at Heartview Saturday afternoon during which participants were given an opportunity to experience some of Heartview’s adjunct services. Spirituality, Acupuncture, Yoga and Leisure in Recovery sessions were enjoyed by many. Saturday evening activities included a social and banquet at a Bismarck hotel. A heartfelt talk was given by the father of a former patient, followed by keynote speaker, Al Gillette, former Heartview Executive Director.
The gathering continued on Sunday morning with a family fun event. An inflatable fun house, dunk tank, and face painting activities were enjoyed by people of all ages. Lutheran Bishop Rev. Robert Lynne delivered a Sunday morning message of hope. A catered picnic followed. Through the hard work of many volunteers and Heartview staff members, Heartview patients and their families reconnected with friends and celebrated the “New Life” Heartview helped them achieve through recovery.
