Quit Week June 15-21, 2020

Tobacco is the number one cause of preventable death in North Dakota and in the United States, yet thousands of people in North Dakota continue to use tobacco and e-cigarettes, despite the health risks of cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and respiratory illness. Tobacco prevention and control partners throughout North Dakota, including Heartview, have joined together to raise awareness of the dangers of tobacco and e-cigarettes and encourage North Dakotans to quit during the statewide quit week. It’s Quitting Time is June 15-21, 2020.

According to the North Dakota Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 19.1% of North Dakota adults smoke cigarettes. Of those North Dakotans that use tobacco, 1,000 die each year.

 

The nicotine in tobacco products and electronic cigarettes make it hard for a person to quit, especially on their own. Reaching out and asking for help is a vital part of quitting tobacco. It’s Quitting Time is a perfect time to increase chances of successfully quitting by seeking help from a doctor, pharmacist, local public health units, or NDQuits. These tobacco treatment specialists can develop a personalized quit plan to help a tobacco user plan for relapse and learn how to prevent it by recognizing triggers.
